Relative Values of Urea and Protein as Nitrogen Supplements for a Low-quality Roughage
نویسنده
چکیده
Wheaten straw diets were supplemented with urea or protein (casein or gluten) and offered ad -libitum to sheep. Intakes and digestibilities of the diets were similar irrespective of the nitrogen source. The breakdown of cotton thread suspended in the rumen for 48 h was substantially increased when protein was substituted in the diets. Despite this increase in cellulolytic activity in the rumen there was little change in the digestion of roughage-cellulose. Ruminal concentrations of isobutyric, isovaleric and n-valeric acids were also increased by substitution of urea with protein. Ruminal ammonia and precipitable protein concentrations were similar with

The Utilization of Urea-supplemented Roughages
In many parts of the world, poor quality roughages low in nitrogen are the only food available to the grazing ruminant. Experiments have shown that under some conditions, still not clearly defined, urea can improve both the digestion and intake of these roughages, and also the nitrogen status of the animal. However, there are reports from both the laboratory and the field, which indicate that u...
متن کاملEffect of Dietary Crude Protein Level on UT-B Expression and Nitrogen Efficiency in Growing Baluchi Male Lambs Fed Low or High Concentrate Diets
An experiment was carried out to evaluate how interactions between forage to concentrate ratio and dietary crude protein level may alter nitrogen efficiency and UT-B expression in growing Baluchi male lambs. Four Baluchi male lambs [30 ± 2 kg BW] were used in a 4 × 4 latin square design with 28-d periods and a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of dietary treatments. The treatments fed forage: concent...
متن کاملEffects of Nitrogen Supplements on Intake and Utilization of Low Quality Forages
Experiments conducted by the authors and their colleagues in the previous five years are summarized. It is concluded that dietary requirements for rumen-degradable, nitrogen (RDN) can be supplied entirely as nonprotein nitrogen (NPN): Also, that supplements of 'NPN and proteins are equally effective in stimulating forage intake, when intake of RDN in the forage is low, provided that intake of N...
متن کاملResponses of Milk Urea Nitrogen Content to Dietary Rume Degradable Protein Level in Lactating Holstein Dairy Cows
Nine multiparous lactating cows averaging 171 days in milk were divided according to days in milk and milk production into three 3×3 Latin squares with three 3-week periods to investigate the effect of rumen degradable protein on milk urea nitrogen. Diets were formulated to provide 3 concentrations of dietary rumen degradable protein (9.8, 10.8, and 11.8% of dry matter), while rumen undegradabl...
متن کاملThe Use of Sweet Almond Meal as a Protein Source in Japanese Quails Diets
In the first experiment, the chemical composition, apparent metabolizable energy (AME), AME corrected for nitrogen (AMEn), true metabolizable energy (TME), TME corrected for nitrogen (TMEn) values of the sweet almond meal were determined in adult Leghorn cockerels. The second experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of different levels of sweet almond meal at 0, 100, 200 and 300 g/kg on...
